New land has been cleared and a wall is built
All our fields are open, but I am planning to establish a special market garden on new land. I started with building a boundary wall and as I have money coming in, after fertilizing the soil with cow dung. will plant trees and roots, like orange trees and cassava.
Before the rainy season we plough the land
In Gambia, every tool we use is manufactured locally and made in a way it can be fixed easily. This is low tech and smart tech at the same time.
After the rain we sow groundnuts for the next harvest
In Gambia, like everywhere, the seasons dominate our work. So we were in a rush to get all our fields sowed with groundnuts. Took us two weeks. In the photo you can see the machine, we use for sowing. After dropping the groundnuts into the furrow, a small blade turns the soil over to cover the seeds. Not bad, what do you think?
Fields of green
We all have heard, that the desert can turn green overnight after the rain. Here in The Gambia this feat of nature happens every year. With a little help from these arms and legs, I have to add. This photo shows the corn, we planted, but our other food crop is groundnuts. Check it out on my Ko-fi page! https://ko-fi.com/nyansubah
Ex Uno Plura
From one becomes many, a principle, we in The Gambia have understood for many generations. If we don´t multiply, nature will not take it´s course. And there will be plenty for all ...
Extended rainy season
This year we were getting rain well into October, so this helped my Cassava cuts to root well and start greening up. Nothing makes a farmer feel better, than a field, that will provide a good crop, the land giving back for all the hard work, that was put in.
Borehole - and .... done!
It wasn't easy to get the funds to drill the borehole and get the piping in, but here we are. What is missing is the pump and solar panel, but we will get there ...
Time is on your side!
Sometimes the waiting is worth it, the Cassava harvest is in and we couldn't be happier for it!
Couscous .. one of our staple foods
Especially children like to eat it, it's soft, easily digestable and goes well with all sorts of vegetables ...mhmmmm
Groundnuts are no peanuts to us
In case you were wondering, why we are so obsessed about our No. 1 export commodity, groundnuts as we call them here in The Gambia it's because they ain't no peanuts to us :)
